Spending billions on computing power is one thing, but turning that hardware into profitable enterprise software is another story entirely. As Nvidia, Broadcom and Palantir report, here is how the entire AI stack is being put to the test across margins, chips and commercial contracts.

For the past two years, the artificial intelligence (AI) investment story has largely centred on one assumption: demand for computing power will keep growing. As hyperscalers increased capital expenditure (CapEx), demand for semiconductors, networking equipment and supporting infrastructure strengthened.

But in late 2026, the market is asking harder questions.

It's no longer just about how much computing capacity companies can build. It's about whether hardware can be delivered efficiently, whether infrastructure costs can be controlled and whether businesses are generating sufficient returns from AI.

That puts three companies under the microscope.

What traders are asking

Can Nvidia maintain margins as AI shipments expand?

Investors will be watching whether higher shipment volumes and growing infrastructure demand can support that margin outlook.

Are custom AI chips changing the economics of data centres?

Are custom chips helping cloud operators manage costs while allowing Broadcom to maintain profitability?

Can enterprise AI revenue justify software valuations?

The next test is whether that momentum continues through larger contracts and sustainable operating margins.

Nvidia key trends

Nvidia enters its next earnings report with expectations already elevated.

Following second-quarter revenue of US$96.2 billion, including US$89.0 billion from Data Center, the company expects third-quarter revenue of approximately US$108.0 billion.

That puts the focus on execution.

Blackwell remains important to Nvidia's installed base, while the Vera Rubin platform has entered production. Higher shipment volumes could support revenue growth, but manufacturing complexity, packaging availability and infrastructure deployment costs still matter.

The key tension is straightforward: can Nvidia expand production while maintaining margins?

A revenue beat may attract attention, but gross margins and forward guidance could be equally important to the market's response.

EARNINGS REACTION FRAMEWORK: NVIDIA
▲ STRONGER THAN EXPECTED (BEAT)

AI shipments accelerate, margins remain resilient

Revenue exceeds consensus, gross margins reach or surpass the upper end of guidance, and management reports continued strength in AI infrastructure demand.

Possible market reaction: Nvidia shares could attract buying interest, potentially supporting semiconductor suppliers and broader technology benchmarks. The response would still depend on expectations already reflected in the share price.

■ AROUND EXPECTATIONS (MEET)

Revenue meets forecasts, margins remain in range

Revenue lands near US$109.0 billion, EPS broadly matches consensus and gross margins remain close to the company's 74.0% guidance midpoint.

Possible market reaction: Shares may consolidate as investors weigh strong absolute growth against the outlook for further expansion.

▼ WEAKER THAN EXPECTED (MISS)

Shipment constraints or margin pressure emerge

Revenue falls below company guidance, gross margins slip beneath the guided range, or management indicates delays in production or deployment.

Possible market reaction: Shares could come under pressure, with weaker sentiment potentially extending into related semiconductor and infrastructure companies.

Broadcom key trends

Broadcom offers a different view of the AI infrastructure cycle.

While Nvidia supplies widely used GPU computing systems, Broadcom develops custom AI accelerators and the high-speed networking technology that connects them. That matters because major cloud operators are looking for ways to expand computing capacity while managing infrastructure costs.

Broadcom also has a substantial infrastructure software business through VMware, providing a different source of revenue and cash flow.

The challenge is managing those businesses together.

Custom silicon growth can increase revenue, but changes in product mix may affect margins. Meanwhile, VMware's subscription revenue and operating costs influence the profitability of the wider business.

The market will be looking for evidence that strong AI semiconductor demand can translate into sustained earnings and cash flow.

EARNINGS REACTION FRAMEWORK: BROADCOM
▲ STRONGER THAN EXPECTED (BEAT)

Custom AI demand exceeds forecasts, margins hold firm

Revenue exceeds consensus, AI semiconductor sales surpass management's outlook and consolidated non-GAAP operating margins remain resilient.

Possible market reaction: Broadcom shares could benefit from stronger expectations for AI infrastructure spending, with sentiment potentially extending to networking suppliers.

■ AROUND EXPECTATIONS (MEET)

AI growth continues, product mix remains in focus

Revenue lands near US$34.9 billion, EPS broadly matches expectations and operating margins remain close to 66%.

Possible market reaction: Shares may consolidate as investors assess whether further custom silicon growth can support profitability.

▼ WEAKER THAN EXPECTED (MISS)

AI demand or margins fall short

Revenue misses guidance, AI semiconductor sales disappoint or the consolidated operating margin weakens more than expected.

Possible market reaction: Shares could face selling pressure as investors reassess the company's earnings outlook and the profitability of its AI expansion.

Sources & Data Methodology Sources: Reporting dates and release times are from company investor relations calendars where marked Confirmed; otherwise they are GO Markets estimates. Consensus EPS, revenue and analyst-range data are sourced from Bloomberg and Earnings Whispers, as at 19 October 2026 (AEDT). Palantir key trends

Palantir represents the next stage of the AI investment story.

Nvidia and Broadcom supply much of the technology needed to build AI infrastructure. Palantir's challenge is different: turning AI capabilities into software that organisations will continue paying to use.

Its AIP helps businesses and government agencies connect AI models with operational data and workflows.

The commercial opportunity has attracted significant investor attention, but Palantir's valuation also places pressure on the company to maintain strong growth.

In Q2 2026, US commercial revenue increased 149% YoY to US$764 million, while US commercial customer numbers rose 35%.

Those figures highlight an important distinction.

Revenue is growing considerably faster than customer numbers, making the size and expansion of existing commercial relationships an important part of the story.

The next question is whether that momentum can continue through new contracts, existing customer expansion and sustainable profitability.

EARNINGS REACTION FRAMEWORK: PALANTIR
▲ STRONGER THAN EXPECTED (BEAT)

Commercial AI growth exceeds expectations

Revenue exceeds consensus, US commercial growth remains strong and management reports further expansion in major enterprise contracts without unexpected margin pressure.

Possible market reaction: Shares could attract additional interest, particularly if guidance strengthens. However, elevated valuation expectations may limit the response even to strong results.

■ AROUND EXPECTATIONS (MEET)

Revenue meets forecasts, commercial expansion continues

Revenue lands near US$2.18 billion, EPS broadly meets expectations and commercial revenue continues growing, even if its growth rate moderates from the previous quarter.

Possible market reaction: Shares could trade unevenly as investors balance operating performance against the growth already reflected in the valuation.

▼ WEAKER THAN EXPECTED (MISS)

Commercial growth slows, contract conversion comes under scrutiny

Revenue falls below company guidance, commercial expansion disappoints or management identifies longer enterprise procurement cycles.

Possible market reaction: Shares could face pressure as investors reassess future revenue growth and valuation multiples.

Company guidance, backlog and operating metrics are sourced from the latest company filings, results presentations or investor relations materials unless stated otherwise. Figures and schedules may change without notice.

What comes next

The next earnings releases will test three different parts of the AI investment cycle.

Nvidia: Can expanding AI system shipments support revenue growth without placing greater pressure on margins?

Broadcom: Can custom accelerator and networking demand grow while consolidated profitability remains resilient?

Palantir: Can rapid enterprise adoption translate into durable commercial contracts and recurring revenue?

The reports may deliver different answers.

Strong hardware results would not automatically establish that enterprise AI investment is producing sufficient returns. Equally, slower software growth would not necessarily mean infrastructure demand is weakening.

The more useful comparison is whether demand, profitability and spending continue to develop together.

The AI investment story is moving beyond how much computing power companies can build. The next question is how much lasting financial value that investment can produce.
